Although this is another of those debatable questions, we will try to be as subjective as possible using all the information from past experience as well as catch records from the charter fleets.

Much of what is considered to be the best halibut fishing in Alaska is found in some of the most inaccessible and inhospitable waters imaginable. Thank goodness that you need not experience these waters to find great halibut fishing in Alaska inner coastal waters. Much of the sport halibut fishing takes place in relatively calm waters from seaside fishing towns like Juneau, Sitka, Cordova and Seward. All of these areas are popular destinations and for good reasons.

But when we say the best halibut fishing we need to look for areas that are exceptional, not just great. So, not to belittle any of the areas along Alaska's alluring coast, we are going to look at some of the top destinations for catch and then rate the access and services from there.

  1. #1 must go to Cordova, this small fishing village is located at the south west corner of Prince William Sound far away from the crowds and totally off the radar of most anglers arriving or living in Alaska.
  2. Just behind Cordova we recognize Valdez as a close runner up in the Alaska halibut fishing hotspots.
